Athletic Women fall to defeat against Valencia

Athletic Club lose 0-2 at Lezama despite an even first half

Athletic lost 0-2 at Lezama against Valencia on International Women's Day as the Club welcomed guest of honour, Honey Thaljieh, our 125th anniversary ambassador for March.

It was an evenly contested encounter, especially in the first half, but los Ché scored after the break through Macarena Portales and Ana Marcos.

There were few chances for either side in the early stages of the game, although Nekane did have a left-footed effort which narrowly missed the target just before half-time.

The second half was a far cry from the first. Sara Ortega hit the crossbar and moments later Macarena Portales scored the first goal of the game. Valencia looked to defend and Iraia Iturregi brought some fresh players onto the pitch.

In the 79th minute, Mariasun Quiñones saved an Ana de Marcos penalty with a tremendous save. The shotstopper shone again in the following move, where she produced an extraordinary stop to keep Athletic in the game. Unfortunately, Valencia doubled their lead in the 81st minute, Ana de Marcos making up for her penatly miss.

Despite the defeat, Lezama looked spectacular, with 1,200 spectators in the stands. The Zurigorri will travel to Fuenlabrada next Saturday to face Madrid CFF.
