The Opponents

One of Cantabria's most historic clubs, Club Deportivo Cayón were founded in the town of Sarón in 1915.

The outfit ceased to exist in 1931 before being reborn in 1945. After progressing through Cantabria's regional leagues, they reached the Tercera División for the first time in the 1977/78 season. Cayón have since become a stalwart of that tier.

CD Cayón's first Copa appearance took place in the 1982/83 season, when they were knocked out by SD Deusto.

Currently, the team from Sarón are in Group 1 of the Segunda Federación and play their home matches at the Fernando Astobiza. So far this season, they've won two matches, drawn six and lost another six - collecting 12 points in total.

The Cantabrians defeated CDE Usaria with a 1-2 away win in the first round of this year's Copa. The Sarón-based side would have preferred to play their match against Athletic at the Fernando Astobiza, but lighting issues mean the fixture will instead take place at Racing Santander's El Sardinero.

This will be the first official clash between CD Cayón and Athletic Club. However, the Lions did take on Racing Santander at the Fernando Astobiza this last pre-season in a friendly match which ended 0-0.
