Yuri Berchiche extends his contract

The full-back whose contract was set to expire in June, has signed a new one-year deal which includes an option to extend it by a further season

Athletic Club full-back Yuri Berchiche has put pen to paper on a one-year contract extension, keeping him in Bilbao until June 2025. The deal also includes an optional clause to extend it for a second season.

The defender, who is in his sixth season at Athletic, signed the new agreement at San Mames on Monday morning alongside club president Jon Uriarte and director of football Mikel González.

Yuri has made 188 appearances as a Lion, an average of just over 30 per season. So far this campaign, he has played 26 times and scored twice, both goals coming against RCD Mallorca at The Cathedral.

The defender's new contract falls in line with the board of directors' policy and contains a fixed salary structure with bonuses based on achieving certain objectives.

Mikel said: "Yuri has been a starter at the club for all his six seasons here and we continue to believe he is a crucial player to this side.

"He is very strong, competitve, he knows what to do in all phases of the game, and he has experience and a winning mentality."
