Third consecutive win for the Lionesses

Iraia Iturregi’s team beat EDF Logroño 2-1 with goals by Valdezate and Moraza

Athletic Club Women defeated EDF Logroño 2-1 at Lezama on Sunday morning. It was a tightly-contested affair in which the Lionesses had to work hard for their win. It was a third consecutive victory for Iraia Iturregi’s side, their best run of the season so far.

An Azkana could have put the Rojiblancas ahead in the eighth minute, but was denied as she went one-on-one with Tajonar. Shortly after, Yulema Corres wasn’t able to direct Azkona’s cross goalwards.

The opening goal came in the 14th minute, and it was another training ground routine worked to perfection. Eunate sent in the corner and Oihane Valdezate nodded it into the back of the net.

Athletic had chances to extend their lead before the break, with Irene Oguiza trying her luck from distance and Monente firing wide.

EDF Logroño came out fighting after the restart. Jade Boho grabbed an equaliser for the visitors in the 51st minute. However, the Lionesses didn’t let their heads drop and midfielder Sophie Istillart struck the woodwork with a long-range effort in the 57th minute.

The Lionesses kept pushing. In minute 63, Monente whipped in a cross but Oguiza couldn’t beat the keeper. The winning goal came in the 69th minute. Azkona, a nuisance down the right flank, cut a ball back into the box which Moraza struck onto the woodwork, the ball bounced back and hit Judith Luzuriaga before crossing the line. The referee gave the goal to Moraza.

The nerves kicked in and although the Lionesses had chances to kill of the tie, they couldn’t. Nonetheless, Athletic held out and took home all three points.
