Heavy loss against newly-crowned European champions

The Lionesses suffer bruising defeat on their first visit to the Johan Cruyff Stadium

Athletic Club Women lost 8-0 against FC Barcelona in their postponed Primera Iberdrola Matchday 28 fixture. It was a tough night at the office for Iraia Iturregi’s side, who barely had a look in against the recently-crowned European champions, and already-crowned Primera Iberdrola champions.

In the 4th minute, Jennifer Hermoso opened the scoring, and shortly after, Martens made it 2-0 with a shot across goal.

The Lionesses tried to keep hold of the ball, but the home side were on top of their game. In the 35th minute, Barça scored twice within 60 seconds. Martens scored at the near post and Hermoso headed home for the middle of the box.

Lucía García had a shot blocked by Paños. Bruna made it 5-0 for FC Barcelona before half-time.

After the break, Athletic youngster Mariana Cerro tried her luck with a tepid shot. But Barça quickly fired back with Jennifer Hermoso making it 6-0. Bruna scored their seventh in the 64th minute and Crnogorcevic topped it off with five minutes left to go.

Iturregi’s team are now only thinking about Real Madrid, who will be in Lezama on Sunday at 11:30 in the morning.
