Athletic Club debutants in 2020-21

Five players made their Athletic Club debuts in 2020-21, four of whom have come up through the ranks at Lezama

Five players made their official Athletic Club debuts during the 2020-21 campaign. Four of the debutants were homegrown, while summer signing Alex Berenguer became the side’s top goalscorer in LaLiga Santander.

The first player to make a debut was Jon Morcillo. After spending pre-season with the senior side, the youngster made his first official appearance for Athletic in the season opener against Granada. Despite the 2-0 loss at Los Cármenes, the winger impressed on the left flank.

Next up was Iñigo Vicente. The creative winger was involved in almost all the pre-season friendlies under then manager Gaizka Garitano, and he made his official debut at The Cathedral. His first LaLiga appearance was as a 61st-minute substitute for Iñaki Williams during the Matchday 4 fixture against Cádiz CF.

Three days later Alex Berenguer got his first taste of action in an Athletic kit. The Navarre native, a summer signing from Torino, first lined up for the Lions against Deportivo Alavés at Mendizorrotza on Matchday 5.

Central midfielder Oier Zarraga made his first senior appearance in the following fixture. Oier took part in three pre-season matches, and even scored against Real Oviedo. He was rewarded for his hard work with a debut at San Mamés, starting in the clash against Levante.

The last Lion to make his debut in the 20-21 season was Nico Williams, who did so during the Matchday 33 fixture against Real Valladolid at San Mamés. The 18-year-old right winger was the first Cub to make his debut under Marcelino, and teamed up with his brother Iñaki in Athletic’s attack for the final minutes of the game. For the first time since Patxi and Julio Salinas last played together in April 1986, Athletic had two brothers on the pitch together at the same time.
