The Zurigorri dominated proceedings throughout and had their most clear-cut chances to score in the first half. Oihan Sancet and Nico Williams both missed the target by inches with efforts inside the box.
After the break, Mallorca's Vedat Muriqi typically menacing. First he had a goal ruled out for offside and then centre-back Dani Vivian denied the Kosovan with a well-timed block.
Valverde brought on Iker Muniain and Los Rojiblancos resumed control of the encounter. In fact the skipper had two opportunities to gift Athletic the victory. He almost caught Pedrag Rajkovic off guard with a left-footed lob and then went close with a header.
