The Opponents

Head coach: Diego Simeone

Having spent 12 years at Atletico, Simeone is currently the longest-serving manager in LaLiga. During his time in charge, Los Colchoneros have won two LaLiga titles, one Copa del Rey, two Europa Leagues and two UEFA Super Cups in addition to twice being runners-up in the Champions League.

From his 472 LaLiga matches as a coach, the Argentinian has won 287, drawn 106 and lost the other 79.

Top goalscorer: Álvaro Morata

The 31-year-old Spanish international in his second spell at the Civitas Metropolitano. Besides his time at Atletico, the forward has had double stints at Real Madrid and Juventus as well as a two-season stay at Chelsea.

So far this campaign, Morata has found the back of the net 14 times in 28 LaLiga matches.

Recent form: LLWWL

Los Colchoneros are in fourth place with 61 points after 19 wins, four draws and nine defeats. Three of those losses have come in the last matches, while they're most recent outing was a shock 2-0 reverse against Deportivo Alaves at Mendizorrotza.

Previous Meetings
We first locked horns with Atletico Madrid (then called Athletic Madrid) in the inaugural LaLiga season of 1929. On that occasion, Athletic took all three points after a 2-3 win at the Metropolitano.

The two sides have faced off a whopping 173 times in the top flight, with Los Leones winning 64 matches, drawing 31 and losing the other 78.

As for the clashes in Madrid, Athletic have emerged victorious 19 times. The Zurigorri's most recent away win against Atlético was a 0-2 victory at the Vicente Calderon in 2010/11, with Gaizka Toquero scoring a brace.

Our last five visits reflect the difficulty in beating Atletico in their own backyard, where the Lions have recorded four losses and one draw in the last few years.

This season's reverse fixture in LaLiga saw the Lions win 2-0 at San Mames on December 16, a day in which we also rounded off our 125th anniversary celebrations. Mario Hermoso scored an own goal early on before Iñaki Williams sealed the deal in the second half.

What's more, Athletic produced a huge performance to beat Los Colchoneros 0-1 in the first leg of our Copa semi-final. Alex Berenguer's 25th-minute penalty helped us become the first team to defeat Atletico at the Civitas Metropolitano this season.
