Last season’s Basque derby at The Cathedral
Athletic beat Real Sociedad at San Mamés in 2019-20 thanks to goals by Iñaki Williams and Raúl García
Athletic Club will see out the year at San Mamés with a Basque derby against Real Sociedad.
On the last day of 2020, the San Sebastián-based side will make the short trip over to Bilbao for the LaLiga Matchday 16 fixture, which kicks off at 14:00 CET.
In recent years the fixture has brought good memories for Athletic fans, especially last season’s clash where the lions won 2-1 with a couple of first-half goals.
The match got off to the best possible start, with Athletic taking the lead after 11 minutes. Ander Capa took a throw-in, Iker Muniain returned it and the full-back put in a cross which Iñaki Williams fired past Miguel Ángel Moyá.
The second was a stroke of genius by attacking-midfielder Raúl García. Moyá was left for dead as Rulo chipped him from outside the box in the 28th minute.
In the second half, Alexander Isak thought he had pulled one back for the visitors, but his goal was overturned by VAR for offside.
Yuri Berchiche almost scored a third with a thunderous effort from distance but Moyá managed to parry the shot away for a corner. In the end Athletic took home all three points.
