Iñigo Martínez

At his pre-match press conference, centre back Iñigo Martínez reiterated that Athletic have already proved they can go toe-to-toe with any of the other three teams in the competition.

Athletic in the Supercopa
Los Rojiblancos have the chance to win the Supercopa for a fourth time in club history, having previously lifted the trophy in 1984, 2015 and last season.

This time last year, Athletic beat Real Madrid 1-2 in a semi-final at La Rosaleda before going on to defeat FC Barcelona 2-3 in extra-time in the final at Estadio de La Cartuja.

Seven years ago, Athletic beat Barça over two legs, winning the first leg 4-0 at San Mamés and then drawing 1-1 at the Camp Nou in the return leg.

In 1984, there was no match, as until 1996 the Supercopa would be automatically awarded to a team if they had won both LaLiga and the Copa del Rey, Athletic did the double in 1983/84.

The Opponents

Atlético de Madrid were founded on April 26 1903 and in almost 119 years of exisitence the Madrid-based outfit have won two Supercopas: In 1985 against Barça and in 2014 against Real Madrid.

In the 1991, 1992, 1996, 2013 and 2020 editions, they had to settle for runners-up medals. In addition to the Spanish Super Cup, they have won eleven LaLiga titles, ten Copas del Rey, three Europa Leagues, one Intercontinental Cup and three European Super Cups.

The two sides have never faced each other in the Supercopa before, but Thursday night’s match will bring their total number of meetings to 230. The overall balance hangs slightly in favour of the team now coached by Diego Simeone.
