Los Leones head to Mallorca looking to stretch their winning streak to three matches in a row

Confidence is flying high at Athletic Club. After two wins on the bounce, including last week's dramatic comeback victory in Bilbao, Los Rojiblancos are gunning for three more points.

This weekend the Zurigorri travel to Palma de Mallorca where they will face Javier Aguirre's RCD Mallorca. Ernesto Valverde's Lions will need to keep their wits about them as Los Bermellones are yet to record a win this season, something they will be determined to change.

The Opponents

Head coach: Javier Aguirre

Born in Mexico to Basque parents, Aguirre is now in his third season with Los Bermellones having arrived in March 2022. The Mallorcan side were in a delicate position when the tactician arrived - 18th in the league with nine games to go.

However, four wins, a draw and four losses from their remaining fixtures ensured survival. Mallorca were much improved under Aguirre last season, completely avoiding the relegation battle to finish ninth with 50 points.

Summer signings:

Aguirre has brought in eight new players this window - including Manu Morlanes, whose loan move was made permanent. In: Sergi Darder (midfielder, from RCD Espanyol), Cyle Larin (forward, from Real Valladolid), Samú Costa (midfielder, from UD Almería), Siebe Van Der Heyden (defender, from Union Saint Gilloise), Omar Mascarell (midfielder from Elche CF), Toni Lato (defender, from Valencia CF), Iván Cuéllar (goalkeeper, from Sporting Gijón).

At the same time, seven footballers have left the Balearic Islanders either permanently or on loan. Out: Kang-in Lee (to Paris St Germain), Iñigo Ruiz de Galarreta (to Athletic Club), Jordi Mboula (to Hellas Verona), Angel Rodriguez (to CD Tenerife), Iddrisu Baba (loaned to UD Almería), Leo Román (loaned to Real Oviedo).

Not the best of starts for Mallorca, who are yet to put a mark in the win column this season. They kicked off the campaign with a 1-1 draw against Las Palmas in the Canary Islands before suffering a 0-1 defeat to Villarreal and going down 3-2 to Granada CF.

Previous Meetings
Our first ever LaLiga clash was a 0-0 draw in Mallorca during the 1960/61 campaign. Athletic have faced Los Bermellones a total of 60 times in the top-flight, registering 28 wins, 15 draws and 17 losses.

Away trips to Palma de Mallorca have been traditionally tough going for the Zurigorri, with Athletic managing seven victories, 11 ties and 12 defeat.

Los Leones' last five visits to the Son Moix are evidence of how difficult it can be to pick up points there, with Los Rojiblancos only coming away with a win on one occasion.

The Lions rescued a late draw in last season's clash at the Estadi Mallorca. The home side took the lead in the 58th minute through Kang In Lee, but Iñaki Williams stepped up to convert a 95th-minute penalty after a Raúl García effort struck Iñigo Ruiz de Galarreta's arm in the box.
