Team News

The Gaffer has named a 21-man squad. Julen Agirrezabala, Aitor Paredes and Nico Serrano are out after having played for Bilbao Athletic on Sunday. Goalkeeper Jokin Ezkieta is back, as is defender Iñigo Martínez, who was suspended against Real Madrid.

Asier Villalibre, Yuri Berchiche, Dani Vivian and Peru Nolaskoain remain on the sidelines due to their respective injury issues.

Marcelino’s Comments

The boss stressed that it’s only a matter of time until Athletic’s luck in front of goal changes, saying: “the number don’t lie and, when they’re like ours, you just have to keep working.”

Marcelino expects the match against Getafe to be “be tight and very tactical”, adding that whichever team is “most accurate” at both ends of the pitch will win.

Head coach: Quique Sánchez Flores

The experienced coach is back in the Getafe dugout for a third time, having also been in charge of the Azulones in 2004/05 and 2014/15. Sánchez Flores has managed nine different clubs in five different countries. Before taking over at Getafe this October, his most recent job was in 2019 with a second spell at English side Watford FC.

Star man: Enes Ünal

The Turkish striker has four goals to his name so far this season, making him Getafe CF’s current top goalscorer. Ünal made his professional debut with local team Bursaspor in 2013/14 before being signed by Manchester City in the summer of 2015. However, he never made an appearance for the Citizens, instead being sent on various loan spells.

He joined Villarreal in July 2017 and was then loaned to Levante and Real Valladolid, before being signed by Getafe CF at the beginning of last season. He has a total of 26 goals in 142 LaLiga appearances.

Previous Meetings

Athletic have played a total of 16 away matches against Getafe in LaLiga, winning three, drawing eight and losing the other five.

The matches tend to be tight, hard-fought affairs, with neither side ever having won by more than a two-goal margin.

The last two LaLiga clashes at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez were 1-1 draws and Athletic’s last victory at the ground came in 2015/16, Iñaki Williams‘ strike helping the Lions to a 0-1 win.
