The Opponents

Head coach: José Bordalás

Famed for producing hardy, tough sides, Bordalás is back at Getafe for a second spell. The former lower-league striker got his first big break as a manager when he took over at Elche CF in 2009.

His first major achievement was securing promotion to LaLiga with Deportivo Alavés in 2015/16, although he was let go shortly afterwards. The tactician ended up at Getafe, leading the side back into the top-flight and recording three consecutive top-10 finishes, including a club record fifth place.

Bordalás spent the 2021/22 campaign in charge of Valencia CF, taking them to ninth place and runners-up in the Copa del Rey. He rejoined Getafe last season, helping them ensure their survival.

Top scorer: Borja Mayoral

The former Real Madrid player has three goals so far this season. Borja is well travelled, having been sent out on loan several times while contracted to Real Madrid. He's had spells at VfL Wolfsburg, Levante, Roma and Getafe before they signed him on a permanent deal last summer.

Recent form: LWLWL

A mixed start to the season for Los Azules, who are currently 13th in the LaLiga standings. Both their victories have come at home (against CA Osasuna and Deportivo Alavés) while they are yet to pick up a point on the road this term.

Previous Meetings
A relatively new fixture in Athletic history, the first time we met Getafe in LaLiga came in the 2004/05 campaign. The overall figures show how demanding these matches are, with Athletic registering 11 wins, 16 draws and nine losses agains the Madrid-based outfit.

The Zurigorri have a slightly more favourable record at home, having managed eight victories, six draws and four defeats.

The last five clashes in Bilbao reflect the evenly matched nature of the affair: three draws and a win apiece.

Los Leones' last win over Getafe at San Mames came in the 2020/21 season. Athletic responded to an early goal by Marc Cucurella by putting five past Los Azules. Raúl García scored twice, while Yeray Álvarez, Alex Berenguer and Oscar de Marcos also got on the scoresheet.
