Match Pack: Getafe CF vs Athletic Club (LaLiga MD34)

Los Leones face Los Azules at the Coliseum in the opening fixture of LaLiga EA Sports Matchday 34

Last week's loss at the Cívitas Metropolitano hurt Athletic Club's chances of securing a Champions League place, but Ernesto Valverde's side will fight in every remaining game to put maximum pressure on Atlético Madrid.

The next hurdle sees Athletic take on Getafe CF at the Coliseum, a tough nut to crack away from home. The Azules will put the Lions to the test in a match that is always hard fought.

Valverde named a 22-man squad for the clash.

Yuri Berchiche, Iñigo Ruiz de Galarreta, Oihan Sancet and Dani Vivian are out injured. Oscar de Marcos is backing after serving a one-match suspension, while Hugo Rincón and Mikel Jauregizar have been called up from Bilbao Athletic as cover.

Valverde's Comments
The gaffer promised Athletic won't be downing tools and we'll look to "be competitive until end of the season".

The Opponents

Head coach: José Bordalás

The 60-year-old head coach returned to Getafe for a second spell in charge in April 2023, taking over from Quique Sanchez Flores. Bordalas had a successful stint at the Coliseum from 2016 until 2021, leading them back into the top-flight in 2016/17 and a record fifth place in LaLiga two seasons later.

Top goalscorer: Borja Mayoral

A former Real Madrid academy player, Mayoral signed for Getafe on a permanent deal in 2022 after loan spells at VFL Wolfsburg, Levante, Roma and Getafe.

The striker has already registered career-best figures this season with 15 goals in 27 LaLiga appearances.

Recent form: WLDDW

With the exception of a poor patch in January and a run of five consecutive draws between September and October, Los Azules have steadily picked up points all season. They've lost just once in their last five matches and their last outing was a 1-3 win over UD Almería.

Previous Meetings
The first top-flight clash between Athletic and Getafe took place in 2004/05. In total we've met 37 times, with Athletic recording 11 wins, 17 draws and nine defeats.

The Estadio Coliseum is a difficult awayday for any side and Athletic have registered three victories, 10 draws and five defeats from 18 encounters there.

Our last five matches at the Coliseum are indicative of how tough it is to pick up points there, with Athletic having come away with four draws and one defeat.

We drew 2-2 in Bilbao back in September. Getafe twice came from behind to take home a point from San Mames.

Yuri Berchiche put the Zurigorri ahead in the sixth minute, but Gastón Álvarez cancelled that out with a strike early in the second half. Iñaki Williams re-established Athletic's lead and then Juanmi Latasa equalised in the 83rd minute.
