Local superiority and a match to forget

Athletic Club were unable to continue their winning streak in Liga and were clearly defeated by Real Madrid (5-1). Benzema’s two goals (the first with help from Aurtenetxe) Ramos, Ozil and Khedira were the result of the 23 actions in which the hosts approached Iraizoz’ goal with clear-cut danger. On the rojiblancos’ side, Ibai scored the goal for our team, his first in the Liga.

After the 3-1 at the break, Athletic tried to react, but in addition to not having much luck with the ref’s criterion regarding hands, shortly before the 4-1 Coentrao committed a clear penalty, it succumbed to a very strong and intense Real Madrid.

The defeat is not what’s worse, since unfortunately the last few seasons have led to similar scores, but the trail of added negative consequences. To the injuries of Muniain and Gurpegi (we must await their evolution), we must add Aritz Aduriz’ sure sanction as he was booked with his fifth yellow, which will carry a suspension that will prevent him from playing against Deportivo on Sunday in San Mamés.

What’s more, during the course of the match serious and reiterated insults have taken place from the stands to players Markel Susaeta and Carlos Gurpegi. In the case of the latter, in addition to letting the referee know what was going on during the match the ref told him he had heard nothing, he was also unable to, at least, have it reflected on the referee match report.

Before the Liga returns, on Thursday there’s the match in Israel for a last shot at the few European options left and with special previous attention to the development of the events occurring in the area.
