Athletic created the chances, but Osasuna scored the final goal

The Zurigorri were unable to take home the Euskal Herria Txapela (Basque Cup) in Barakaldo

Athletic failed to win another Euskal Herria Txapela, in its ninth edition, after losing against Osasuna, who scored the only goal of the match in the final stages.

Despite the defeat, Ernesto Valverde's team, which featured several young players, dominated the match and had several chances to score, with Nico Serrano having clear opportunities.

The match began with Athletic in control, creating chances and finding ways to unsettle Osasuna on both wings, although it was the Pamplona-based outfit who could've gone ahead first. Alex Padilla saved a Rubén García free-kick and then denied Iker Muñoz not long after.

After the 30th minute, the Zurigorri had their best chances. A great move by Gorka Guruzeta, who set up a counter-attack after Osasuna cleared the ball from their area, allowed Nico Serrano free to run through the centre and shoot, but Aitor Fernández saved the effort.

Nico had another chance with a good shot afterwards, followed by another from Guruzeta near the post.

A header from Unai Gómez into the hands of Fernández opened the second half and after the first quarter of an hour the changes began.

Valverde gave Adrián Pérez and Iker Monreal their first-team debuts, as well as bringing on Izeta. Xabier Irurita and Mikel Santos came on shortly afterwards, followed by Eder Sánchez and Ibon Sánchez.

The Zurigorri dominated, and Serrano tried his luck twice from outside the area, but the Osasuna goalkeeper made two saves.

Then came the only goal of the game. Asier Osambela scored on the third rebound after two Santos saves. The match ended with a great save by Santos, who tipped a shot that was heading for the top corner over the bar.
