Bilbao Athletic’s perseverance turns out to be fruitless

After the defeats in Guijuelo and Leioa, and the draw with CD Izarra at Lezama in between, in their match against Barakaldo CF, corresponding to the 17th matchweek in the Second Division B Group II, Bilbao Athletic adds a pointless result to the list of consecutive matches without winning, being this the fourth in a row.

Barakaldo CF started with strength and made the first goal attempt of the derby just a few seconds into the game, by means of a cross from the right that nobody finished off. On 10 minutes, after a long run, a left-footed shot from Morcillo was gathered by Cacharrón.

When a first half with no clear scoring chances was about to end and everything indicated the game was going to remain goalless at the interval, a fine pass to Delgado was finally netted with a low strike as Ezkieta moved forward.

Once the second half had started, the first substitution made by Joseba Etxeberria consisted of bringing on Baqué to replace Víctor, who handed him in his armband as a captain. A low cross-shot from Artola from inside the area went out by a whisker. Areso, really active on the right wing, assisted with a header a long ball which had been sent by Vencedor, but Baqué could not finish it off.

One more time, a long shot from Artola tried to get past the visitors’ keeper, but it was stopped by him. With 20 minutes to go, Tascón substituted Murua with the intention of reinforcing the front line, and later our last substitution came when Prados entered in the place of Zarraga.

The same as Areso, Imanol also performed well in attack, and one of his crosses from inside the box ended up hitting a Barakaldo CF’s defender before being cleared by Xabi Galán from the very goal line.

After a corner-kick, Guruzeta sent the ball over the bar. Unfortunately, Bilbao Athletic’s persistence has not been fruitful and the visitor team came out winners from the derby, being this the first home defeat of the season for the side managed by Joseba Etxeberria.

Bilbao Athletic is closing the year at Reale Arena, playing against Real Sociedad’s reserve team in the match corresponding to the 18th matchweek in the Second Division B Group II, which will be held on Sunday 21st December at 6.00 pm.
