Bilbao Athletic prevailed over CD Tudelano for a one-goal margin in a contested match, decided by a single goal from Guruzeta
A hard-fought win for Bilbao Athletic over CD Tudelano at Lezama thanks to the only goal of the evening scored by Gorka Guruzeta, who took advantage of a ball cleared after Morcillo had hit the post to give his team the lead.
Tudelano started the match with relentless energy in attack and Néstor was about to surprise Ezkieta with a long shot, but the ball went over the bar. Zarraga responded in the following play after a pass from Areso but his strike was easily stopped by goalkeeper Oscar López. What seemed to be a back-and-forth game quickly turned into a match where both teams had serious difficulties to create danger in their opponents’ box.
Joseba Etxeberria was forced to substitute Areso on 20 minutes due to the physical problems the right back was having, bringing on Álvaro Núñez. Bilbao Athletic kept insisting through their left flank, with Imanol and Morcillo participating actively, but their crosses were not finished off by any of the red-and-white players. Tudelano hardly got near the hosts’ box, although one more great long shot from Néstor forced Ezkieta to make a fine dive to stop it.
Joseba Etxeberria made a move in the break, bringing on Salado in the place of Prados, who showed signs of slight discomfort. Bilbao Athletic shifted to a higher gear at the beginning of the second half, having the clearest opportunities of the game. Guruzeta created the first chance after a good pass from Sillero, but Bilbao Athletic’s forward missed it. Morcillo, protagonist on the left flank one more time, hit the woodwork with a cross-shot that astonished everyone at Lezama. It served as a prelude to what would happen 10 minutes later. But before, Vencedor sent a good cross to Salado, whose shot was diverted by Tudelano’s goalkeeper for a corner. Bilbao Athletic were superior on the pitch and got their reward on 65 minutes. Morcillo slammed the ball against the post and Gorka Guruzeta, who was lurking for the rebound, kicked the ball into the back of the net. The second goal scored by the red-and-white forward this season.
Tudelano, desperate for points to avoid relegation, went into attack mode in search of the equaliser, what served to open the game. However, they did not cause big problems for goalkeeper Ezkieta. Morcillo gave it a go one more time and Artola shot to the centre of the goal after a fine pass from Núñez. Marcos Isla had the best opportunity for the visitors with a header, but Ezkieta saved it without difficulty. On approximately 90 minutes, Álvaro Núñez was shown a second yellow card, so the Cubs played the dying minutes of the match with one less player.
A narrow win for Bilbao Athletic, who are sitting second in the Second Division B Group II, 3 points away from leaders UD Logroñés, who will play tomorrow at Las Gaunas against Salamanca CF. The Cubs will face Osasuna B on the road next week.
