History repeats itself at the Santiago Bernabéu

Real Madrid 3 Athletic Club 0

Apr 21, 2019

Athletic Club lost 3-0 to Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu. Benzema scored all three goals, and all of them came during the second half.

Unfortunately, history has been repeated in the Santiago Bernabéu and now we have gone fifteen years without getting three points in Madrid.

The local team asserted its quality above the circumstances, although the final difference may seem excessive. During the first half, the forces have been balanced, with a clear absence of goalscoring opportunities, with the unequal criterion when showing yellow cards being the most remarkable of the aforementioned forty-five first minutes.

In the second half, the outcome has begun to be written very soon. After a brilliant counterattack with Córdoba’s cross that Williams was not able to finish off in the area, there was another counterattack which Córdoba failed to put away. The half finished in the worst possible way: Asensio’s cross and Benzema’s unstoppable header.

Real Madrid felt better on the pitch. Spaces are synonymous with risk at the Santiago Bernabéu when the hosts take the lead. Even so, Athletic remained “alive” in the game until the 77th minute. Aduriz and Unai Lopez came in to try and find the equaliser and, in the same move, a corner kick was headed into the net by Benzema.

Everything seemed impossible, and even more after Aduriz hit a shot high and, especially, when Navas had deflected with his legs a head from close range of Williams. The third goal, already in the discount, has been an anecdote.

It’s a defeat that does not move us away from the European goal with five match days to go. The following date to try and continue in the continental fight will be this Wednesday in Leganés. Raúl García will sit out the next fixture. He’s picked up five yellow cards and, therefore, will serve a one-game suspension.
