Great point at the Bernabeu

Athletic closes a great 2019 with a draw and with Simon as the star

Dec 22, 2019

Athletic Club gets a point at the Santiago Bernabéu that serves to close a great 2019, in which the team took off in January and leaves December in seventh place. Getting something out of the white coliseum, taking into account the situation of the Zidane’s players, is not easy. A great performance by Unai Simon was necessary. But the Lions also had chances of scoting, like the Williams’ one, the cancelled goal to Kodro and the two final threats of Lekue and Villalibre.

Equipped with three midfielders, the Lions put their faith in the resistance to such magical players as Benzema and Modric. Two losses forced Simon to be paying big attention from the outset. A stop to Vinicius and then Benzema kept Athletic alive. Athletic did not face the situation until the 20th minute, when Raul García threw Williams towards Courtois and the Belgian pulled his left hand out to avoid a 1-0 draw.

There were two more white scares in the first half, one that Núñez took out with the spur to Benzema and another header from the Gallic to the hands of Athletic’s goalkeeper. There was, however, a play that generated doubts, although by the VAR was evident an offside. A goal annulled to Kodro after good action of Vesga.

The red-and-white came out well after the break, although Nacho hit a corner to the bar. Simón continued well by stopping Benzema and Athletic discovered that there was a way with Lekue’s arrivals. Villalibre came in and faked a shot off. The last post, Jovic’s, was missing and there were two red-and-white chances, one from Lekue and the other from Villalibre. A golden point and enjoy Christmas. Athletic have won the first round against FC Barcelona and drawn at the Bernabeu. Compete.
