Athletic have fun in Leioa

The Lions thrashed the local side 0–11, with seven goals coming in the first half

Edin Terzic’s side put on show to help the town of Leioa celebrate its 500th anniversary.

The thrashing, featuring goals of all kinds, against an SD Leioa side that was completely revamped and rejuvenated compared to last year, bodes well for the future. The 0–11 scoreline spoke for itself.

Athletic went on a goal-scoring spree in the first half, netting seven goals – and it could have been even more.

The strikes were shared between Gorka Guruzeta (3), Robert Navarro (2) and Álvaro Djaló (2), who was in fine form again and also struck the crossbar. Oihan Sancet also had a goal ruled out.

Although the vast difference in pace and quality of play between the two sides was evident throughout, the second half was of a different nature, with Athletic finding it difficult to score as many as in the first 45 minutes.

Alex Berenguer slotted home a pass from Hierro in the 60th minute. A Leioa defender turned in an Elijah Gift pass to make it 0-9 and the icing on the cake came with an Asier Hierro brace.

The striker's first came following a powerful solo run and he finished off a counter-attack from Gift for the second.
