Athletic draw rain-soaked friendly with SD Eibar

The honours were shared at a wet Gazituaga, with Guruzeta and Yuri scoring for Athletic, whilst Adu Ares and Martón netted for the LaLiga Hypermotion outfit

Athletic Club drew 2-2 with SD Eibar in what was a rainy and physically intense pre-season affair at Zamudio's Gazituaga ground.

Jokin Aranbarri's and Mikel Balenziaga's Eibar side were a significant step up in level for the Lions, who had to work hard and dig deep to against their Basque opponents.

Adu Ares put the Armeros ahead early on before Gorka Guruzeta continued his pre-season scoring streak with a decent finish inside the box in the 25th minute. However, Javier Martón struck around the half-hour mark to give Aranbarri's team the lead at the break.

Edin Terzić made one change at the interval, bringing on Asier Hierro for Guruzeta up top.

The young forward had a couple of chances to equalise but couldn't get the better of Eibar's shotstopper.

Athletic made eight changes shortly after the hour mark and one of them, Iñigo Ruiz de Galarreta, tried his luck from distance, but missed the target.

Just as the match seemed destined for an Eibar victory, Yuri Berchiche netted a superb long-range free-kick in stoppage time to make it 2-2.

Athletic’s next pre-season tune-up sees them take their preparations up a further gear as they face LaLiga 2026/27 newcomers Racing Santander in Laredo on Wednesday, 29 July.
