Athletic Club beat Real Club Celta 2-1 at San Mamés. Aduriz, from the penalty spot, and San José, in stoppage time, scored our team’s goals while Iago Aspas gave his team the lead at the start of the second half.

An important victory to end the year looking upwards. A comeback based more on faith than football, put in by the Celestes from the opening whistle. The visitors’ dominance did not come to an end until the start of the second half when Aspas put his team ahead.

The Rojiblancos had been inferior up to that point, but they did not give up and as the minutes went by, at least, they were able to regain the initiative. The equaliser came in the 82nd minute after a penalty on Williams, a penalty that, despite the better Celeste play, could have been awarded on a couple of occasions in the first half for a handball or a blow to Raúl García’s face.

With the draw in the bag and numerical superiority due to Roncaglia’s double yellow card, Athletic did not lose faith and Mikel San José, with a left-footed shot as the ball fell, certified a comeback of merit due to the size of the opposition.

Now it’s time to close out 2016 with the Copa match on Thursday against Racing, again at San Mamés.
