Athletic Club defeated Rayo Vallecano 3-2 in San Mamés. Iñaki Williams (x2) and Raúl García scored Athletic’s goals. While Álex Moreno and Raúl de Tomás scored for Rayo Vallecano.
The victory was well deserved, but taking into consideration how the team played and the chances created the difference should have been bigger. VAR also played an important role
The beginning was dazzling, with Williams scoring an early goal thanks to a previously worked strategy.
The team never backed down, instead it continued stealing the ball in dangerous areas.
VAR was called into action to award a penalty in our favor, but Alberto saved Raul Garcia’s shot and then Yeray’s subsequent shot. Shortly after Álex Moreno scored Vallecano’s first goal of the match.
The doubts at half-time were soon dissipated by Williams, who took advantage of an stolen ball to make the score 2-1.
At the same time, Advincula saw two yellow cards within a few minutes. Alberto Garcia continued to be a stubborn presence in goal and the third goal was difficult to find.
Raúl García eventually scored after several attempts. Even so Athletic couldn’t relax and De Tomás scored the final goal of the match to make it 3-2.
The bad news is that Yuri and Dani Garcia suffered injuries.
Now we look ahead to next Sunday’s visit to the Santiago Bernabeu.
