Athletic succumb to an emphatic 4-0 defeat at Los Cármenes in the last match of the season
Athletic Club have fallen to a 4-0 defeat in Granada in a sad ending to the season. The Andalusian side, who have qualified for Europe for the first time, celebrated in style on the pitch, while the lions finished the campaign in the middle of the standings.
Gaizka Garitano’s side were dominating at the beginning, with a high pressing game, but It was all just a mirage. They created the first chance of the match on 31 minutes, thanks to a fantastic play from Córdoba, who set up Villalibre in front of Rui Silva. He tried to slot the ball between the Portuguese goalkeeper’s legs, but he failed.
The lions were not having any troubles at the back, but they eventually allowed Soldado a one-on-one situation after a poor back pass. Of course, Granada’s striker did not have mercy and beat Herrerín, lobbing him as he came out. Vesga had to leave the pitch in discomfort and Unai López came on in his place, creating Athletic’s second and last chance before the break. Rui Silva stopped with a brilliant diving save.
The second half was far worse. Athletic suffered not being able to stop the hosts’ counter attacks. Puertas, Carlos Fernández and Montoro were the goalscorers after the break. Athletic had only a couple of chances from Raúl García and Williams, but Rui Silva’s great performance prevented the latter from scoring.
A disappointing ending to the season that leaves Athletic in the eleventh position. All the same, the Copa final against Real Sociedad is yet to be played.
