Athletic fall in San Mamés after conceding an own goal against a rival that defended its treasure
Athletic Club lost 0-1 in San Mamés against Cádiz CF. The Andalusian side went one-nil up in the 56th minute when midfielder Unai López inadvertently sent Lozano’s cross into the back of the net. From then onwards, Cádiz defended as if their life depended on it. Athletic barely got a look in, their best chance came when Iñaki Williams’ header hit the crossbar.
There were no clear chances in the first half, but the game sprung to life in the second. Especially after Cádiz defender Akapo was sent off in the 47th minute. Lozano tested Athletic keeper Unai Simón moments before the passage of play that gifted the visitors the three points.
Despite the numerical advantage, first playing against ten and then nine after striker Negredo saw red for diving in the area, Athletic could not find the goal they needed.
Winger Iñigo Vicente came on for his debut and seemed to give Cádiz something to think about. But the truth is Gaizka Garitano’s side were unable to create decent chances inside the opposition box, despite their numerical superiority. Only shots from left-back Yuri and forward Raúl García threatened the Cádiz keeper.
