The lions lose 1-0 to Osasuna in a derby without any clear chances
Athletic Club were beaten 1-0 by Osasuna at El Sadar on the day Osasuna celebrated 100 years since their founding. A 80th-minute penalty, converted by Rubén García, was enough to give the home side the win.
Although Athletic dominated large spells of the match, there weren’t many clear-cut chances as both sides defended well. The first warning shot was fired by winger Alex Berenguer, whose shot from outside the area was tipped over by Osasuna keeper Sergio Herrera.
Not long afterwards, a diagonal pass from Iñigo Martínez found Iker Muniain on the right, the attacker played the ball back inside for Unai López, but the midfielder’s shot was also saved by Herrera.
López had another effort minutes later, this time he tried to catch the shotstopper off-guard with a quickly taken free-kick from distance, but Herrera once again averted the danger.
After the break, Gaizka Garitano’s side tried to break down Osasuna’s compact defence. A nice move down the right saw Ander Capa get in behind his opposite full-back, Capa’s cross found forward Raúl García in the box but he couldn’t get the better of Herrera.
It began to feel as if Jagoba Arrasate’s team were waiting for an Athletic mistake in order to win the match. Osasuna’s winger Jony was put through one-on-one with Unai Simon but Athletic’s keeper was on hand to snuff out the danger.
The home team got their breakthrough when in the 79th minute substitute Kike Barja won a penalty, which was then converted by Rubén García.
Athletic desperately searched for an equaliser in the dying moments, throwing the kitchen sink at Osasuna’s defence. Capa had an opportunity with a header but failed to put it away.
In the end, Osasuna took the three points, beating Athletic for the first time in four matches at El Sadar.
