Inspired Pacheco denies Athletic at San Mamés
Athletic Club drew 0-0 with Deportivo Alavés at San Mamés. The visiting side managed to take home a point from Bilbao thanks to some outstanding saves by their keeper Fernando Pacheco.
Winger Jon Morcillo was behind two of the Lions’ best chances in the first half. In the 13th minute, he drove into the box before firing a powerful shot wide of the target. Four minutes later he rattled the crossbar with a thunderous effort from outside the box.
Just before half-time, Alavés thought they had taken the lead against the run of play via a thumping Joselu header. However, the goal was disallowed when VAR decided there was an offside in the build-up play.
After the break, the visitors had another effort ruled out for offside after Florian Lejuene had put the ball in the back of the net.
In the final ten minutes, the Lions had even more opportunities to bag the three points. Centre-back Unai Nuñez got a head to Iker Muniain’s free-kick delivery in the 83rd minute, but Pacheco was once again on hand to frustrate the Rojiblancos.
In the 88th minute, substitute Alex Berenguer went through on goal after a flowing counter-attack, but Pacheco just managed to divert the shot with his leg.
Now Athletic’s focus turns to the upcoming Copa del Rey final against FC Barcelona on April 17.
