Athletic Club defeated Real Celta Club de Vigo by 3-2 and has achieved a victory that will go down in history as it was the opening match of the new San Mamés. San Jose, Iraola and Beñat have become the first rojiblancos to score. For the Galician team they have been Charles (author of the first goal in San Mamés) and Santi Mina.
A much opened match in the first half, especially after Charles and San Jose’s goals, and including a doubtful missed penalty, before the break for the rival goal scorer.
In contrast, in second half our team has read the game better and was able to break distance in the score, with Iraola’s goal, after a heel pass by Muniain, and that of Beñat, who debuted as an Athletic Club goal scorer after finishing off a counterattack and pass by San Jose. The goal scored by Santi Mina in the final stretch brought about some uncertainty in the stands, although the match has been controlled with certain degree of calm.
During the pre-match ceremony the president and captains of both the male and female teams carried out an exciting act, where the pitch, a floral offering to the bust of Pitxitxi in its new location and the flag, have perfectly symbolized the transit between two different scenarios but with the same spirit.
And beyond what concerns matters of the heart, the sporting outcome has been excellent, since the victory places us with nine points, a good number to continue trying to improve. A rather positive evolution that we hope continues next Monday in Cornellá.
