Athletic Club defeated Atlético de Madrid 2-0 at San Mamés. Iñaki Williams and Kodro scored the goals, both in the second half.

A well-deserved win against an opponent that we struggled against in recent seasons and who we deserved to beat in our last match. A rounded afternoon thanks to continuous work and a correct reading of the game in all phases of the match. It is always difficult to neutralise the current second-placed team, a wounded opponent on this occasion, and our team knew how to do it.

In the first half, there was a balance of power, although the Red and Whites took the initiative for most of the time. There was fierce fighting in all areas of the pitch and the best chances came from the boots of Ibai Gómez, the first a shot wide with his left foot and the second a tremendous volley that Oblak cleared off the line.

After the break, Atlético, who had been held without a shot on target for an entire half, took a step forward and dominated the game, but found themselves up against a team with no fissures.

As well as containing, Athletic were able to play with space and press when necessary. The atmosphere on the pitch was in keeping with the importance of the game and Athletic’s performance, and the joy was multiplied a hundredfold when Williams headed home a cross by Córdoba after a previous steal by the left winger himself.

The hardest part seemed to be done, almost confirmed when Williams shot narrowly over and certified when the newly introduced Kodro sealed his recent promise – via a press conference – to score his first goal in a short space of time. Three points to leave the bottom far behind.

The next match will take us to Girona after the league break, on Friday 29 March. Yeray will not be there due to five yellow cards. In addition, the match has left us with other interesting facts: Iago Herrerín’s 100th game and Iñigo Lekue’s return to the pitch. Apart from that, Peru Nolaskoain and Guruzeta will play this weekend in Bilbao Athletic’s match against Arenas in Lezama.
