Athletic Club - Real Racing Club de Santander

Athletic now have their first win of the pre-season. The Lions defeated Racing Santander 2-1 in an entertaining friendly played at an enthustiastic Lasesarre stadium.

Iñaki Williams and Peio Canales scored after being set up by new signings Andoni Gorosabel and Alvaro Djaló.

An early warning from Jon Karrikaburu aside, most of the action took place at the other end, Athletic making sure former Lion Jokin Ezkieta had a busy night. Iñaki and Gorka Guruzeta both had chances ad then the no.9 scored after connecting with Gorosabel's low cross into the area.

Ernesto Valverde fielded a different starting XI for the second 45, one full of youngsters, and they made an instant impact. Mikel Jauregizar found Djaló, who showed great vision to assist Canales for his first senior goal.

Athletic looked for a third, with Adu Ares getting in on the act, but Racing pulled one back when their academy graduate Yeray capitalised on a poorly cleared ball.

Marco Carrascal tested Oier Gastesi, who played the last quarter of an hour, but the goalkeeper blocked the effort. And Athletic had one last chance when Ezkieta stopped a powerful Hugo Rincón shot and Javier Martón sent the rebound over the bar.
