Athletic thrash Getafe at San Mames
Athletic and Berenguer ran riot from set pieces and thrashed Getafe as the Lions paid tribute to Guruzeta and to Club Members with 50 years at the club

A comprehensive victory was fitting tribute to the fans and the injured Gorka Guruzeta as Athletic Club thrashed Getafe CF 4-0 at San Mames. It was a match in which the Lions put on a masterclass from set pieces, scoring three goals from deadballs.
Alex Berenguer, who scored the opener from a direct free-kick, set up the other three for Iñaki Williams, Aitor Paredes and Yuri Berchiche.
With Beñat Prados, Dani Vivian and Nico Williams returning to the starting line-up, together with debuts for Christian Imga and Jesus Vizcay… Only Iñigo Ruiz de Galarreta’s muscle injury marred an otherwise flawless afternoon
Athletic's return to San Mamés was a crucial fixture and José Bordalás-led side is always a tough nut to crack.
Apart from a Ramon Terrats effort that Unai Simón saved, Edin Terzic’s side barely conceded a single opportunity.
Nico Williams came close to scoring with a shot across goal early on and Berenguer made it 1–0 with a free-kick in which Maroan Sannadi wrong-footed David Soria by moving towards the near post.
The Rojiblancos were a very disciplined side, with the centre-backs keeping a close watch on the opposition.
Beñat Gerenabarrena had to come on for Galaxy and won a crucial ball, linking up with Berenguer. Alex played a long ball and found Iñaki Williams in a textbook counter-attack. The captain found himself one-on-one with the opposition goalkeeper and slotted home a low shot.
After a shaky start to the second half, Imga made his debut, coming on for Nico to a round of applause, and Paredes headed home from a Berenguer corner to make it 3-0
The final, decisive goal was the icing on the cake, coming after Mario Martín’s red card for a foul on Gerenabarrena. Berenguer played a short pass to Yuri and the left-back whacked in a powerful effort from distance.
Just before that, Prados took to the pitch for his comeback, joined by Vizcay, the other debutant.
An afternoon of pure joy at The Cathedral.
