A young Athletic side goes down 3-1 to UD Logroñés in the first 2020-21 pre-season fixture.
Athletic Club lost 3-1 in Las Gaunas in their first match of the pre-season, a game marked by the presence of many academy players in Athletic’s ranks. Iker Muniain scored the lions’ only goal of the game and despite heavy rain affecting the pitch, there were no injuries.
It was a match to build up strength and fitness, and there were a lot of tired legs after all the double pre-season training sessions. Athletic started off well, with Nico Serrano twice threatening opposition keeper Miño. But UD Logroñés went into the break 1-0 up after taking advantage of a bad pass out from the back and forcing a penalty which was scored by Zelu.
The second half, with five debutants and ten changes (all except Unai Simón, who leaves for international duty soon), was better. However, Athletic were unable to get on top of the game due to a couple of spectacular goals, a free-kick from Iñaki Saenz and a header by Andy.
Athletic got their equaliser thanks to great work by the ever-active left-winger Jon Morcillo. His low cross found striker Ewan Urain whose shot rebounded off Miño into the path of Muniain for the goal. Just when the lions seemed to be growing into the game and lookin to get the win, they were stunned by their opponents. And the Logroñés goals came after Oier Luengo had a goal disallowed for offside after a nice passing movement down the right.
