Athletic went ahead twice, but go home with one point after Weissman’s late equaliser
Athletic Club drew 2-2 with Real Valladolid at San Mamés on Wednesday night. The Lions remain in ninth position in the LaLiga Santander table and still have not won back-to back matches this season.
They had it in their grasp after twice going ahead, but striker Shon Weissman equalised for Valladolid five minutes from time to make it 2-2.
In the first half hour, they were far superior against a relegation-threatened opponent. In the 13th minute, Jon Morcillo whipped in a perfect left-footed finish from outside the box to put the home side ahead and get his first goal for Athletic.
The home-grown player went close to making it 2-0 in the 31st minute, but Jordi Masip got the better of the winger’s volley.
Valladolid did not threaten much, but they did give Athletic a scare just before half-time when Weissman had a goal ruled out. The visitors went up a gear after the break, going forward with confidence. Óscar Plano and Marcos André had chances.
But Athletic also had two clear chances. Asier Villalibre spun his marker before firing off a shot, but Masip got a hand to it and then Iñigo Martínez was also denied at point-blank range by the agile Valladolid keeper.
Marcelino made a triple change shortly after and Lezama-graduate Nico Williams made his debut. It was the first time Athletic have had two brothers on the pitch at the same time since Julio and Patxi Salinas played together.
Fabián Orellana made it 1-1 with a header in the 69th minute. But the Lions responded quickly. Ibai Gómez released Iñaki Williams down the left-wing, and the forward played it across the goalmouth for Raúl García to slot home, making it 2-1.
Valladolid threw everything forward and Weissman equalised with a fine finish at the near post in the 85th minute.
