Athletic produce crucial comeback in Oviedo
Los Leones delivered a fantastic second-half comeback to secure a vital win thanks to great goal from Jauregizar and a penalty converted by Sancet
Athletic Club pulled off a crucial fight back to win 1-2 in Oviedo. It's a victory which gives the Lions some breathing space in the table and a platform to keep climbing.
After a first half in which Athletic were pushed back and fell behind after a goal from Ilyas Chaira, the Bilbao side turned the game around with belief and determination.
Mikel Jauregizar showed his courage when equalising with a stunning effort before going off with a knee injury. Oihan Sancet, back in the starting XI, completed the comeback with a 70th-minute penalty.
Despite a promising start by Ernesto Valverde's men, Real Oviedo gradually gained ground and Hasseim Hassan threated in the 20th minute.
It was a forewarning that turned into a nightmare ten minutes later when an Aaron Escandell long ball and a flick-on found Ilyas, who fired past Unai Simón.
Athletic's only other chance of the half was an Iñigo Ruiz de Galarreta volley.
The Zurigorri were a different side after the break, coming out with a new-found determination.
Jauregizar then levelled with a superb effort close to the hour mark. We now wait to see the extent of his injury.
Athletic delivered the killer blow in the 71st minute. Yuri put the ball into the area, Iñaki Williams got a head to it and it hit David Carmo's hand. Sancet made no mistake from the spot.
