Villarreal CF - Athletic Club

Athletic Club lost 1-0 at La Ceramica, with Alberto Moleiro striking for the home team. It was a match in which Ernesto Valverde's side had plenty of chances to score.

An Alejandro Rego shot hit the crossbar in the final stages was the defining moment in a desperately unlucky game game for the Lions. What's more, Mikel Vesga was injured after coming on as a substitute.

Facing a much superior opponent, the Lions suffered a similar fate to that at Mestalla. They dominated the first half, well supported by Unai Simón with a couple of saves, and enjoyed a clear double chance from Oihan Sancet, with Villarreal goalkeepr Junior miraculously getting a toe to the attacking midfielder's effort.

Nicolas Pepé was a threat, but so was Gorka Guruzeta, the striker almost scoring after a great team move. Even the lively Iñigo Lekue made a confident run into the box. Athletic had the upper hand.

However, Villarreal grew into the game with a more direct style of play after the break. Pepé and Rafa Marín had chances, before Moleiro scored in the 76th minute after a pouncing on a loose ball in the box.

Athletic were quickly running out energy left, but it seemed Rego might have rescued a ooint with when he hit the woodwork.

It was a tough defeat, but there is no time to rest as we prepare to visit Dortmund.
