A debut to forget

A heavy defeat for the Lions against Sevilla FC in a match marred by a red card for Yuri, who had lost control of the ball

Athletic Club suffered a 1-3 defeat against Sevilla FC in a match marred by an early red card for Yuri Berchiche. From that point on, despite debutant Edin Terzic’s side performing better with a man down, they fell victim to their own mistakes. Paredes’ goal offered a glimmer of hope, but it proved to be a pipe dream.

The red card, which left San Mamés utterly outraged, was compounded by an incident in which a challenge by Simón – contested as a possible foul – was capitalised on by Osso. There was a row at half-time reminiscent of days gone by.

Sancet, Canales and Iñaki came close to making it 1-1, but it was Sevilla who struck early after the restart through a counter-attack finished by Ejuke.

It was the final straw when Isaac Romero made it 0–3 following a defensive error. The ever-present Canales, who formed the midfield alongside debutant Gerenabarrena, gave it a go, but Odysseas saved it.

Another fine move by Canales, with a back pass to Sancet, resulted in a corner which Paredes headed into the net. With 20 minutes remaining, Athletic refused to give up. Berenguer had a chance with Sevilla sitting deep.

It was a blow in a match that began with a great deal of emotion, thanks to the tributes paid to the European and World champions, and the moving tribute in the form of a minute’s silence for Carmelo Cedrún, with the two goalkeepers standing by the centre circle alongside Iribar.
