Athletic secure a hard-fought draw at Mestalla

Edin Terzić’s side started strongly but faded as the match went on, whilst Guruzeta went off injured in the second half

Athletic Club worked hard to secure a 0-0 draw against Valencia CF at Mestalla, in what was the Lions' final LaLiga match at the iconic stadium.

Following a minute’s silence in memory of former Valencia goalkeeper Antonio Ramírez, the first half began with Athletic completely dominating possession and dictating the play.

The Zurigorri had control of the ball, but failed to translate that dominance into chances. Valencia set up a double defensive line that prevented Terzić’s Lions from finding spaces behind.

Furthermore, Athletic’s possession became a double-edged sword at times, as Javier Aguirre’s men didn’t think twice whenever they won the ball back.

With just one or two passes, or a quick run with the ball, they were bearing down on Unai Simón’s goal. The home side’s main was ruled out for a prior foul.

Athletic’s dominance even led to the Mestalla crowd booing their own players at times.

Athletic’s best move came with ten minutes to go before half-time. Robert Navarro beat José Gayà with two feints and managed to put in a cross that Peio Canales scuffed in the box.

Athletic struggled to hit their stride in second half. Valencia pushed hard with substitutes Luis Rioja and David Otorbi creating several chances in quick succession.

Terzić, who had brought on Mikel Jaureguizar at half-time, introduced Alejandro Rego, Jesus Areso and Gorka Guruzeta throughout the second 45. However, Guruzeta picked up a knock shortly after coming on and was replaced by Maroan Sannadi.

Athletic were looking to settle into their game but found it difficult against a more confident Valencia side. The hosts, spurred on by their fans, created decent chances as they searched for a winning goal. Several saves from Unai Simón and some solid defending helped thwart a number of opportunities.
