Athletic take a win in Balaídos with a brilliant first half

Two superb goals from Berenguer and Robert Navarro capped off a victory characterised by relentless football

Terzic’s Athletic side steamrollered their way through Balaídos. A superb first half, featuring numerous chances and two stunning goals from Berenguer and Robert Navarro, was enough to see off an RC Celta side that was unable to prevent their first league win of the season, a 0–2 victory.

With seven changes at the starting eleven from the Camp Nou match, Athletic took to the pitch determined to steamroller their way across the restored pitch at Balaídos. Simón saved them from their only early slip-up with a save from Williot at point-blank range, and Terzic’s men began to feel right at home.

With solid pressing and some brilliant combination play, Athletic created chance after chance. The first came from a brilliant piece of play by Sancet, which Radu saved with a huge save.

It didn’t matter, though, because Athletic – with two masters of interception and passing in Gerenabarrena and Galarreta – produced two stunning goals from Berenguer and Robert Navarro between the 20th and 22nd minutes.

It was a shame that Radu denied Iñaki Williams the chance to make it 0–3 following another well-worked move in midfield. RC Celta’s only real chance was a Jutglá corner that hit the crossbar. The final score could even have become 0–3 from a set-piece involving Berenguer and Navarro.

Giráldez saw how dire the situation was and made four substitutions at half-time. Celta rallied and forced Athletic to dig deep. Although Sancet had a great chance following a pass from Areso, the Vigo side dominated the game. With Nico Williams coming on, Athletic had two clear chances, one of which ended in a move that looked like a penalty. A great victory.
