Athletic Club defeated Sevilla FC 0-1 at the Sánchez Pizjuán on Monday night. The Lions scored in the 90th minute with Oihan Sancet launching a counter-attack and playing in Iñaki Williams, who finished past Bono.

The Lions now sit in ninth place and are six points off Real Betis in sixth. The Lions also edge out Real Betis on goal difference in their head-to-head this season.

Julen Lopetegui’s side came into the match looking to keep their LaLiga title hopes alive and were threatening throughout the tie. Athletic let Sevilla control possession and tried to hit them on the break at every opportunity.

The Lions took a blow early on when Raúl García went off injured. But his replacement Oihan Sancet was crucial to the win, linking midfield and attack well all night.

Athletic’s plan worked to perfection. The Lions also had goalkeeper Unai Simón to thank. The no.1 was at his unbeatable best, making three great saves to keep his side in the match. On two occasions the Athletic no.1 stopped what looked to be certain goals by Youssef En-Nesyri.

The Lions first major chance came after the break, with Asier Villalibre spinning Jules Koundé in the box before firing a right-footed shot wide.

If Athletic struggled somewhat in the first half, their defensive performance in the second half was magnificent. Sevilla posed less problems and Simón was once again at hand to prevent Marcos Acuña from scoring.

Nico Williams thought he had put the Lions ahead and got a first senior goal only for it to be fairly flagged for offside.

In the end it was Iñaki Williams, the older brother, who found the breakthrough and made sure the Lions brought all three points back to Bilbao.
