Athletic draw at Mestalla after late Valencia equaliser

A goal by Marcos André in the 94th minute deprived Athletic of all three points at Mestalla

Athletic Club were held to a 1-1 draw at Mestalla as Marcelino returned to the stadium where he had so much success as Valencia coach.

Iñigo Martinez opened the scoring with a superb header but Marcos André’s 95th-minute strike left the Lions’ hopes of victory in tatters. The visitors still had a chance to win the game with Iñaki Williams‘ having header brilliantly saved by Cillessen.

Everything suggested this would be tight game with little to separate the sides, and that is exactly what it proved to be.

An active Iñaki Williams, who equalled Juan Antonio Larrañaga’s LaLiga record of 202 consecutive appearances, caused Valencia’s defence all sorts of trouble early on. His first major involvement was sending in a cross which Unai Vencedor was inches away from putting in the back of the net.

In the 20th minute, Iñaki scored a header from Alex Berenguer‘s cross, but the goal was ruled out for offside. A few minutes later, Raúl García was played through by Iker Muniain, but his shot went wide.

After the break Valencia’s Daniel Wass went close to putting the hosts ahead, however Unai Simón got down well to turn the Dane’s strike onto the post.

Iñigo Martínez scored his second goal of the season in the 69th minute with a well-placed header from Berenguer’s corner.

All was on track for the Lions to pick up a third win of the season. Gonçalo Guedes missed a chance and Maxi Gómez was sent off in the 81st minute. But Marcos André scored a shock goal in the 95th minute.

Shortly after Williams, who deserved a goal to go with his performance, had a chance to make it 1-2 but Jasper Cillessen denied the striker with an acrobatic stop.
