Athletic fall to late defeat in Mallorca
Athletic Club lose out despite drawing level after being 2-0 down at half-time
Athletic Club lost 3-2 against RCD Mallorca on Monday night. After being 2-0 down at half-time, the Lions managed to draw level after two goals in quick succession around the hour-mark.
However, Mallorca struck but in the 87th minute when Kubo’s shot went in off the back of Unai Simon after hitting the post.
The Lions got off to a promising start, with Raúl García missing a golden chance to give Los Rojiblancos the lead when played through by Oihan Sancet. But it was Mallorca who took the lead, Salva Sevilla converting from the spot in the 21st minute after Pablo Maffeo was brought down in the box.
Eight minutes later, some indecisive defending allowed Ángel to score and double the Balearic Islanders’ lead.
The Lions did not down tools, fighting back in the second half and going level with goals in the 58th and 68th minutes. The first came from a low Yuri Berchiche cross which Raúl García guided into the net and then Alex Berenguer did well to put away an Iker Muniain corner from close-range.
Mallorca looked down and out and Athletic went on the hunt for a winner, but it was not to be. Iñaki Williams had an effort blocked in the box in the 84th minute and moments later Mallorca found their winner.
It’s time to dust ourselves down and get ready to take on Real Sociedad in this Sunday’s Basque Derby.
