Athletic Club managed a 2-0 derby victory against Osasuna in our final home match of the season. The win, together with Villarreal’s defeat against Real Sociedad, means the Lions will remaing in the hunt for Europe until the last fixture.

Thanks to goals from Alex Berenguer and Asier Villalibre, Marcelino’s side are now just one point behind Villarreal and can go above the Yellow if they end the season level on points thanks to better results in the matches between both sides.

Los Rojiblancos will take on Sevilla next week, with Andalusians now guaranteed Champions League qualification. Meanwhile, Emery’s team visit the Camp Nou and must match or better Athletic’s result at the Sánchez-Pizjuán. If Villarreal lose in Barcelona, one point will see Los Leones return to Europe.

It was a just win, with San Mamés at its electric best urging on Athletic. Nico Williams tested Sergio Herrera in the 16th minute, the goalkeeper tipping the winger’s left-footed effort onto the crossbar. Moments later injury forced off Raúl García early on, Berenguer replacing the forward.

Berenguer made an instant impact, playing through Iñaki Williams on the counter before Herrera thwarted the no.9 with a good save. Athletic broke the deadlock just after the half-hour mark, Berenguer outjumping his marker to head home an Iker Muniain corner.

Berenguer was at the heart of the action ten minutes later, teeing up Iñaki with a back-heeled through ball, but Osasuna’s keeper was once again alert enough to stuff out the danger.

Marcelino was forced to bring off Nico Williams at half-time with the young forward seeming to have picked up a muscular injury, Asier Villalibre came on in his place.

Kike Barja and Ante Budimir had Osasuna’s only meaningful chances of the game in the second half, but neither managed to truly trouble Unai Simón.

Both sides looked weary as the game drew to a close. But Athletic were able to draw one final spark thanks to the San Mamés crowd. A long pass by Yeray released Iñaki Williams at pace and the Panther found Villalibre at the far post.

There was a roar from the crowd as Ander Capa came on for the final few minutes, the right-back even going close to scoring a third goal for Athletic.

Although still dependent on other results going their way, today’s performance means Athletic now go to Seville with their European hopes very much alive.
