Athletic start pre-season with defeat in Burgos
The Lions lose 2-1 in their first match of the summer, with Martón on the scoresheet
Athletic Club began their pre-season with a 2-1 defeat against Burgos CF at El Plantío. Bolo's side were tidy throughout, scoring two goals via mistakes, while Javier Martón netted for Athletic.
Ander Cantero denied Unai Egiluz at the end to prevent a draw. The match served to get minutes in legs and give debuts to new signings and academy players.
The first eleven of the pre-season included the two new signings on the right flank, Andoni Gorosabel and Álvaro Djaló, both of whom showed what they're capable of when given space. In sweltering heat, Ernesto Valverde fielded two different sides in each half. Mikel Vesga picked up a knock halfway through the first half and was replaced by Mikel Jauregizar.
The game started in a rush. Issues in the ticket office meant many fans weren't in the ground by time the clash kicked off. In the first minute, Yuri Berchiche, playing at centre-back, scored an own goal when he caught Alex Padilla off guard with a long backward pass under pressure.
Athletic stepped up a gear after the break. Straight after the restart, Marton tested Cantero after collecting a good pass from Jauregizar. However, Valverde's side gave another goal away when Florian Miguel headed home at the far post after a dangerous turnover in the box.
Los Leones struck back quickly, Marton reducing the deficit by prodding home an Aingeru Olabarrieta cross at close range. Oier Gastesi twice stopped Burgos going 3-1 up, the youngster keeping out Edu Espiau in a couple of one-v-ones.
Athletic went for an equaliser. Iñaki Williams fired a left-footed effort over the bar and Marton connected with an Adama Boiro pass. However, the best chance fell to Unai Egiluz, the centre-back forcing an incredible save from Cantero with a powerful header.
