Athletic beat Osasuna to win the Basque Cup
The Lions ran out 2-1 winners in Barakaldo thanks to goals from Djaló and Iñaki Williams
Athletic Club beat CA Osasuna 2-1 at Lasesarre to lift the Euskal Herria Txapela (Basque Cup) for a third time, following on from victories in 2018 and 2022.
Two beautifully-struck efforts from Álvaro Djaló and Iñaki Williams were the deciding factor, while Rubén García scored Los Rojillos' only goal of the game.
Athletic enjoyed the lion's share of the chances, mostly dominating the match throughout, with the scoreline being closer than what was seen on the pitch.
Djaló's pace and skill were on shown from the offset and the summer signing played a pivotal role in the Zurigorri's win, scoring the first goal and setting up Iñaki for the second.
After a couple of early warnings, the forward netted with a powerful shot inside the box after picking up a low cross from Beñat Prados. The joy was short-lived, however, as Rubén García levelled the scores immediately afterwards, heading home from close range from Jesus Areso's precise delivery.
The score was level at half-time, but Ernesto Valverde's charges continued to control the game and mount dangerous attacks. In one of them, Williams received a pass from the ever-present Djaló on the edge of the box before turning and curling in a superb curled effort.
Overall, a great performance by the Rojiblancos, who will play two more away friendlies next week, against Aston Villa and Stuttgart, as they continue preparing for the start of the league season.
