Athletic squander a great opportunity in Seville
Another league defeat for the Lions, who saw their lead slip away in a match which they dominated

Athletic Club remain stuck on 24 points in LaLiga after suffering another defeat, this time losing 2-1 against Sevilla FC at the Sánchez-Pizjuán.
It was a painful result. Athletic had taken the lead but Sevilla fought back with two goals coming from mistakes: a counter-attack that ended with a Peque Fernandez goal and a penalty converted by Akor Adams in the second half after a handball in the box.
Athletic were flying when Robert Navarro opened the scores in the 40th minute. The winger netted from close range after Odysseas Vlachodimos parried an Urko Izeta effort into his path.
However, a loss of possession in midfield led to Peque equalising just two minutes later. Painful but unforgivable.
It was another evening of mistakes and misfortune. Unai Simón denied Adams, who was perhaps offside, early on. Iñigo Ruiz de Galarreta then went close making it 0-1 in the 13th minute. The midfielder caught Sevilla's goalkeeper out of the box but his chipped effort missed the net by inches.
Both sides looked to deliver a killer punch and it could've gone either way. VAR ruled out a Nemanja Gudelj goal for a foul on Aitor Paredes and then Izeta, making his first LaLiga start, did well to set up Alex Berenguer, but the winger's shot went over the bar.
The first two goals of the match came in quick succession and Izeta even had a chance to make it 1-2, getting his chest to a cross in the six-yard box.
Athletic were left reeling when the referee gave Sevilla a penalty for a Yuri handball in the 53rd minute. Oihan Sancet, Berenguer and the young Asier Hierro tried to get us back on level terms, but there was no way through.
A tough setback, but now we have back-to-back home games to regain some confidence. First, Wednesday's Champions League clash with Sporting Clube de Portugal and then the Basque Derby against Real Sociedad on Sunday.
