Athletic sink to 0-2 home loss as big mistakes lead to goals by Hugo Mallo and Iago Aspas
Athletic Club lose 0-2 to RC Celta at San Mamés. It was an evenly-matched affair in which the Galicians took advantage of two Athletic errors.
Hugo Mallo and Iago Aspas bagged the goals for the visiting side. The loss means the lions’ run of three straight wins at home has come to an end.
Celta had the first big chance of the match, whilst at the other end Athletic had a penalty shout. A good move down the right saw Iker Muniain come close to making the breakthrough, but his effort from a tight angle went just wide.
In reality, it was a game of few chances, but after the break Celta took it up a gear. They had a goal disallowed for offside and then took the lead in the 60th minute.
A stinging counter-attack after winning possession in the middle of the pitch allowed Santi Mina to play in Hugo Mallo, who scored with a header at the back post.
It came just as Gaizka Garitano was preparing to bring on Raúl García and Unai López.
The Galicians sent on a third defender and set out to prevent Athletic getting the equaliser. In the 78th minute, a poor throw-out from Unai Simón towards Ander Capa lead to Braís Mendes setting up Aspas for the second and final goal of the match.
Time for a big reaction when the lions face Valencia at Mestalla on Saturday 12 (14:00 CET).
