Real Sociedad - Athletic Club

Athletic Club drew 1-1 at Anoeta against Real Sociedad. The Lions looked set for victory after Asier Villalibre headed them in front, but Roberto López caught Unai Simón by surprise in the 88th minute. 

The derby was tightly-contested and began with Athletic giving the newly-crowned Copa del Rey champions a guard of honour. The Rojiblancos got off to a better start, even though defender Yeray Alvarez hobbled off with an injury early on. Real Sociedad’s Aihen Muñoz was also forced off with an injury before half-time.

Iñaki Williams and Raúl García both had chances to put Athletic ahead. Williams failed to get his shot off and fired wide after being played through on goal by Alex Berenguer. Rulo took aim with a left-footed half volley but couldn’t hit the target.

Athletic almost took the lead after the break when substitute Mikel Balenziaga linked up well with Berenguer, who controlled the left-back’s cross well before his shot hit Robin Le Normand and went wide for a corner.

The introduction of Cristian Portu and Adnan Januzaj breathed life into the home side and they began to trouble Athletic’s defence. Portu had a shot and then Roberto López fired wide.

Athletic took the lead against the run of play Villalibre headed home from Alex Berenguer’s delivery. It seemed the Lions would hold on to take home all three points, but Real Sociedad’s López caught Simón off-guard with a cross-shot to make it 1-1.
