Athletic unlucky against Sevilla

Two posts, a save by Bono from Raúl and an unscored penalty did not help Marcelino’s team, who lost thanks to an isolated action by Delaney

Athletic Club were beaten 0-1 by Sevilla FC in a match in which bad luck reigned supreme. The lions did everything but score to take the three points, they enjoyed a torrent of chances in the first half and Lopetegui’s team scored a goal, scored by Delaney, in one of the two chances they had in the match.

On this occasion even the posts came up against Athletic, in two impeccable right-footed strikes from Dani García and Vencedor in the 26th and 45th minutes. Even the referee’s design worked against them, with a clear penalty on Muniain not signalled either by Hernández Hernández or by the VAR.

And the fact is that Sevilla, apart from the first chance of the game from the goalscorer Delaney, which Lekue headed suspiciously wide for a corner, did not get close to Simon. They just let the clock run down and made three glaring errors on the ball. In the first, Bono deflected Iñaki Williams’ shot wide, in another Raúl García came up with a great save from the visiting goalkeeper and in the third, Vencedor hit the inside of the post. The same area of the woodwork, but on the other side, prevented Dani García from breaking his drought in front of goal after a great pass from Nico Williams, who would also enjoy his chance.

In the second half, Sevilla limited their mistakes and dropped deeper still. Athletic had another great chance when Petxarroman, Sancet and Iñaki put the ball over the top for Muniain. With the saint’s face in their face, the Sevillians took the three points against Marcelino’s team, who were carried in their arms by a dedicated San Mamés. What a cruel defeat!
