The Lions scored four goals in the space of twenty minutes during a thunderous second half
Athletic Club romped to a 4-0 Basque Derby victory over Real Sociedad on Sunday night. The visitors were powerless to stop the Lions, who were unstoppable in the second half.
Athletic planted their flag in the fight for Europe in the most dramatic of fashion, firing four goals past their rivals during a riveting second-half performance.
Los Rojiblancos’ strikes came in all shapes and sizes. They scored from two corners, a dazzling counter-attack and a skillful team move which let Iker Muniain put the game to bed.
Iker had had a penalty saved by Alex Remiro when the scores were still 0-0, a moment that went from being key to anecdotal.
Marcelino’s side grew into the match against an opponent who seemed weary from the start. There was little action until the 28th minute, with the referee awarding Athletic a penatly after VAR confirmed David Silva handballed Iñaki Williams‘ shot. Iker went left and Remiro dived the right way.
Left-back Yuri Berchiche tested Remiro with a powerful shot from the left a few moments later, but the first-half played out with out much more drama.
Athletic came out firing after the break. Alex Berenguer threatened with a header and Iñaki Williams forced Remiro into action. The Lions finally took a deserved lead in the 68th minute.
It came from a Berenguer corner flawlessly headed in at the far post by centre-back Dani Vivian. Just four minutes later, young forward Oihan Sancet slotted home his sixth goal of the campaign after getting hold of Muniain’s corner at the near post.
The Lions were in full flow and the third goal came with 10 minutes left on the clock. Sancet played through Berenguer who cut a pass back across goal for Williams to tap in at close range.
Oihan showed his class once again to set up Muniain for the final blow. Iker made no mistake, drilling a shot past Remiro.
Real Sociedad, a difficult opponent, were absolutely blown away by the Lions . Three important points which put Europe within touching distance for Athletic. Next up is a trip to the Camp Nou.
